Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
